How does Chess Global League work?

Each month players are grouped by Elo rating into groups of up to 5. You play two games against every opponent in your group — once as White and once as Black. Results are submitted on the site, your Elo rating is recalculated, and the top players promote while the bottom players relegate.

Is Chess Global League free to join?

Yes, Chess Global League is completely free. There are no subscriptions, no premium tiers, and no ads. You just sign up and start playing.

How is my chess rating calculated?

We use an Elo-inspired system. Beating stronger opponents earns more rating points; losing to weaker ones costs more. Your rating is recalculated at the end of each round based on all results.

Can I play chess in person with Chess Global League?

Yes! Local city leagues let you play rated chess face-to-face at cafés, parks, chess clubs and other venues near you. Your Elo rating is shared between the online and local leagues.

What happens if I lose a match?

Even if you lose a match 0–2, you still earn 1 point for playing. Participating always rewards you, so there is never a reason not to show up.

Where can I play online chess games for the league?

You can play on any platform you prefer — Lichess, Chess.com, or anywhere else. Just paste the game link when submitting your result so other players can replay it.

How to Join a Local League

Go to the Leagues page and find a local league in your city.
Click Request to Join. Your request goes to the league admin for approval.
Once approved you will appear in the standings and be grouped for the next round.

Playing In Person

Arrange your games with your opponent directly — agree on a place and time that suits you both. Popular spots include:

Games are played over a physical board. Each league has a default time control, but players can agree on any of the supported formats:

After the game, both players submit the result on the site as usual — select the venue and format used.

Match Format

Every match against an opponent consists of two games — one as White, one as Black. This balanced format rewards both opening preparation and defensive solidity.

Who plays White in game 1 is agreed between players. If undecided, the player currently higher in the group table goes White first.
After playing, both players independently submit the result through the site — preventing disputes and keeping everything transparent.
Conflicting results are highlighted in red and must be resolved before they are finalised.
Once both sides agree, the result is locked in gray and cannot be modified.

Points are awarded per match (two games combined). Even a loss earns you 1 point — there is always a reason to show up and play.

Your rating is the heartbeat of the league — it determines your group each round and reflects how your game evolves over time.

Elo-inspired calculation: beating stronger opponents earns more rating; losing to weaker ones costs more. Every game matters.
Premium bonus: extra points shown in gray after a + sign in the standings reflect your group level rewards.
Promotion & relegation: finish at the top of your group and you move up a level next month; finish at the bottom and you drop down. The middle holds steady.
Activity bonus: the system gently rewards active players over time, ensuring the top of the table reflects who is actually playing — not just historical achievements.
