The tempting mistake
3...Ne7?? develops a piece but takes the e7 square away from the king and cuts the queen off from f6. Because the g-pawn has already moved to g6, nothing can capture on f6: 4.Nf6# is mate.
The safe defence
Cover f6 before anything else. 3...Bg7 guards it with the bishop; 3...c6 chases the knight away from d5.
